Make Espresso In The Woods With The New Coffeejack

There is no such thing as too much coffee gear. You probably already know this but sometimes it’s nice to hear, especially when you are tying to justify buying yet another brewing device that does more of less the same thing as the dozens you already have. But what if it’s incrementally better? And more to the point, what if that tiny increase makes the whole world of difference? It’s the Coffee Geek’s Dilemma. It’s a bad case of SproMo.

Thus there is the Coffeejack. Now in its second version, the Coffeejack promises full-pressure, precision espresso making in a portable package, and it’s live on Kickstarter now.

Espresso on the go is a nut that hasn’t yet fully been cracked. There are very good options available—the AeroPress does an admirable job, especially when you add in a few aftermarket components, and the Aram makes wonderful espresso, though it comes with a hefty price tag—though they often lack precision when it comes to how (and in what amount) the pressure is applied to pass the water through the grounds.

The Coffeejack uses a crank similar to that of a hand grinder—and with visible cogs rotating around a larger wheel that look straight out of the Weber Workshop—to allow the user to not only create the pressure but control the amount, up to 10 bars. And with the pressure gauge, when the Kickstarter states gets applied evenly throughout the brew.

The V2 features a few key upgrades over the original, specifically studier materials like stainless steel and aluminum as well as an increased 54mm diameter portafilter basket able to hold 18g of espresso, as well as an insulated water chamber for better heat retention.

And if you want, there’s an optional digital pressure sensor, because why wouldn’t you want you portable manual espresso maker to connect via Bluetooth to your phone? Still, the Coffeejack promises a hefty but lightweight construction in a small, go-anywhere package. (Still gonna have to bring that tamper, though.)

With three weeks left in the campaign, the Coffeejack V2 has raise a whopping £285,000 ($376,000 USD), over 40 times its £7,000 goal ($9,240). But there are still rewards available for interested parties, including a 14% discount off the £198 MSRP, bringing the total down to £170 ($225). Rewards are scheduled to begin shipping out in November.

So if your chase for the god shot has taken you somewhere deep into the woods, perhaps the Coffeejack is what will help you find your way out. For more information, visit the Coffeejack V2 Kickstarter page.
